Top Tips for Safer Internet Day 2024

February 6th 2024

Today is Safer Internet Day 2024, which is being celebrated around the world with the theme ‘Inspiring change Making a difference, managing influence and navigating change online.’

The theme emphasises the need for individuals to take an active role in protecting themselves from online risks and to take steps to navigate the internet safely.

It also highlights the role of government, law enforcement, and internet service providers in making the internet a safer place for everyone.

There are many ways you can support Safer Internet Day, including adopting safe online habits yourself, and passing them on to others … who could be family members, friends, neighbours, colleagues and, if you can, those in your community who you consider particularly vulnerable to online harms. We have a set of top tips which we call ‘new to the internet’, but which we would all do well to think about from time to time. Click here to see them.

But some of the most vulnerable people on the internet are in our own families: our children, grandchildren, nephews, nieces and older relatives. Take time to think about their online safety and do all you can to support them in keeping themselves protected.

Also, remember that there’s no place online for abuse and disrespect: we shouldn’t hide behind our screens and we should always consider how our actions make others feel.

Include the hashtag #SaferInternetDay on your social media posts and discussions to spread awareness about this day and encourage others to take a stand against internet abuse.

By following these simple steps, you can help to make the internet safer and more secure for everyone.
