The footballer’s fiancée, Rebekah Nicholson, tweeted a photograph of their one year-old daughter Sofia on Sunday evening, wearing the club's home shirt with 'Daddy' printed on the back and accompanied by the words "Thanks to @CuteCute_co_uk for Sofia's gorgeous Leicester Blue clip!".

The tweet received a number of abusive responses from trolls. Nicholson responded to one by tweeting: "There are no words for people like you! You need locking up." The responded by tweeting a screenshot of the abuse to his 248,000 followers, describing it as “shocking and vile” … supported by other Twitter users.

29 year-old Vardy has been instrumental in his club’s leading position at the top of the Premier League, and has six England caps, scoring in the games against Germany and the Netherlands in March.

Leicestershire Police have received a formal complaint, saying: “Leicestershire Police is investigating a report of malicious communication being sent via social media. Enquiries remain ongoing and the force is liaising with Leicester City Football Club."

A Leicester City FC spokesman said: "We have offered our full support to Jamie and his family in dealing with this shocking abuse and referred the matter to the police."
