The HTC phone was taken from the boy’s coat pocket when he was walking through Wivenhoe Park in Colchester on an April evening.

A built-in security feature was activated on the mobile which then sent the image to the owner’s email. It is thought that this occurred when the man repeatedly entered the incorrect PIN in an attempt to use the phone. The boy then provided the image to Essex Police, who are now trying to trace the man.

Anyone with information which could help officers to discover the identity of the man and recover the phone, should contact PC Joe Self from Essex Police Neighbourhood Crime Team on 101.
