Oxford & Cambridge hacking attempt charges

A Kent man has been charged with 17 offences connected to the blocking of the websites of Oxford and Cambridge universities and Kent Police.

Lewys Martin, 20, is due before Maidstone magistrates on 20 December. The charges also relate to the theft and use of personal data and failing to disclose passwords to encrypted equipment. All offences concern public-facing websites.

Martin is charged with the following:

  • Eight counts of unauthorised acts with intent to impair operation of or prevent or hinder access to a computer.
  • Three counts of unauthorised computer access with intent to commit other offences.
  • Four counts of obtaining an article for supply for use to commit or to assist in commission of computer misuse.
  • Two counts of failing to comply with a notice to disclose the key to protected information.

According to Kent Police, Martin was charged following an investigation by its Special Branch Investigations Team and the Kent Police Digital Forensic Unit.
