Apple's introduction of its new iOS 7 operating system in a blaze of publicity less two weeks ago was quickly followed by some high-profile publicity about less-than-perfect security features. Not least of these was a flaw in its lockscreen which had allowed people to bypass the protection and hack into the owner's content.

The bug exploited a vulnerability in the system's new control centre to offer rapid access to the camera, calculator, alarms, social networking accounts and other function, as well as being able to send text messages.

As well as being available for devices on to which the new operating system was downloaded, the update is also available for the newly-announced iPhone 5s and 5c. It also offers the option of a Greek keyboard option for passcode entry.

At this stage it is not clear whether the patch also closes a security hole which enabled calls to be made to any number via the emergency call screen.
