Lock down on burglaries this summer

As lockdown eases in the UK, a rise in burglaries is expected. Neighbourhood Watch has partnered with the Home Office to create a new social media campaign that alerts those most at risk, with practical tools that are proven to prevent burglary by nearly 50 times.

Life’s safer when you know your neighbours. With more people looking out for unusual behaviour on your street, burglaries can be prevented.

People are being strongly encouraged to use the WIDE combination of security measures in their home, which reduces the risk of burglary by nearly 50 times. Readers are directed to a prevention checklistlocal crime map, and Neighbourbood Watch’s membership page.

Please help to spread the word by talking to your neighbours, family members who live separately from you, and via your social media.

Why is Get Safe Online involved in a campaign on burglary prevention?

We have wholehearted got behind this campaign as we are supporters of campaigns issued by both Neighbourhood Watch and the Home Office. However, there’s another reason.

Many people fall into the trap of posting that they’re away on holiday or a short break on social media, whether it’s a Facebook Checkin saying that they’re at the airport, or family photos by the pool of their villa. On the face of it, this sounds like a fun idea, but unfortunately, social media is also a tool favoured by burglars, checking to see if a property is empty before they break in.

Of course, foreign holidays and staycations are still both being treated with great caution by many people, but if you are planning on taking a break, or are away on one, please do keep it to yourself on social media.
