Account Takeover

Account takeover takes place when a fraudster or computer criminal poses as a genuine customer, gains control of an account and then makes unauthorised transactions. Any account – including bank, credit card, email and other service providers – could be potentially taken over by fraudsters.

When online banking accounts are taken over illegally, it is normally as a result of phishing, spyware or malware scams. This is a form of internet crime or computer crime. Fraud has been committed when money has been lost.
